KBLOG 67: Be Inspirational with Project Based Learning

The Challenge:

We hear a lot about project-based learning (PBL) and its benefits for students.  Benefits including increased student motivation, development of problem-solving skills, collaboration and improved communication, ownership of the learning process, real-world connections and the development of research skills. Often at the start of the school year, as parents and teachers we desire to have our students engage in more project-based learning. We are geared up and excited to add PBL to our teaching strategies. but the demands of testing, curriculum constraints, and busy schedules often push PBL to the sidelines. To truly make PBL a central part of our students' educational journey, we need a streamlined, practical strategy that can seamlessly fit into our busy routines.

A Solution:

The key to successful PBL implementation lies in aligning projects with students' needs and interests. Effective projects typically have clear goals, specific rules, defined timelines, and measurable outcomes. Here are some factors to consider:

  • Age: Tailor the complexity of the project to the students' developmental stage.

  • Interest: Choose projects that ignite curiosity and engagement.

  • Ability: Match the project's difficulty with students' skill levels.

  • Individual vs. Group: Decide whether the project is best suited for solo work or team collaboration.

  • Resources: Ensure the necessary materials and support are available.

  • Time: Plan projects that fit within your teaching and parent scheduling and can be realistically completed by students within the given timeframe.

NASA and other organizations offer a range of exciting PBL opportunities that are perfect for students. To get started, check out these resources and consider subscribing for updates:
