The Challenge:

At this time in educational history, you should not have bored students! I cringe when I hear students say, “This stuff is so boring.”  That statement is just not acceptable. There are so many amazing learning opportunities that students can and should be exposed to. These are authentic experiences that can be an extension of the basic concepts that students are learning in class or at home. Educators must present students with ways that they can apply their learning to something real. As a result, they can feel accomplished and see the meaning in the concepts being taught.

 A Solution:

I cannot think of a better platform for students to apply their skills and gain new knowledge than the website Zooniverse.  This webpage welcomes viewers with the statement,  “People-powered research”  and that perfectly sums up their work. Zooniverse is the world’s largest platform (over one million people) where people volunteer to assist professional researchers and their amazing variety of projects. Anyone can get involved and according to the Zooniverse website:

You’ll be able to study authentic objects of interest gathered by researchers, like images of faraway galaxies, historical records and diaries, or videos of animals in their natural habitats. By answering simple questions about them, you’ll help contribute to our understanding of our world, our history, our Universe, and more.

I am certain that no matter what topic you teach or at what time of year, there will be a project that a student can get involved in and contribute to while developing new skills. The disciplines of the projects are listed on their website. They are: Arts, Biology, Climate, History, Language, Literature, Medicine, Nature, Physics, Social Science, and Space. There is something for everyone of every age.
