The Challenge:

I must admit that a few times in my career, when I was exhausted, maybe having a really bad day or not prepared to teach a lesson, I had some favorite movies that I would show the class. Showing a video for a full class period was a rarity for me. Presenting videos in class is always a challenge. Learning time is precious so it is important that as a teacher, you have a specific purpose to show a video and the video is clearly connected to class curriculum.

A Solution:

It is important that you use videos that are generally short, have a clear message, and relate to what you are teaching at the time. Try to show videos that are not more than about six minutes long. I love videos that convey information in a succinct way with beautiful graphics and powerful music. In the following resources, there are two groups of powerful videos that you should consider for your students/children.

1. An abundance of amazing, vetted movies selected by Science Magazine (A compilation of some of the most popular and well-liked videos they have produced)

2. Frank Gregorio’s YouTube Channel contains videos covering a large array of science topics.  The music and graphics are fantastic. I like to use these videos to introduce topics.
